Work – Imaging the Bible in Wales

This research project brings together work on the Visual Culture of Wales and Biblical Studies, examining ways in which Biblical themes, subjects and characters have been expressed by visual artists in a variety of media.

Lion, the symbol of St Mark.   Logo designed for the project, based on an image of the symbol of St Matthew from a window in the Church of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows, Dolgellau, and text by Henry Wilson at Brithdir, near Dolgellau.

My experience working on the Visual Culture of Wales series was that there was still much more work to be done and discoveries to be made in the field. Concentrating on just one area and within a certain timespan, that of biblical images during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, has already suggested a wealth of new and varied material, some of it of great quality and imagination.

Lion, the symbol of St Mark. Peter holding keys. Virgin and child. Moses holding the Ten Commandments.

Working closely with Dr John Morgan-Guy, who also worked on the VCW project with myself and Peter Lord, I have been visiting places of worship and archives researching and photographing all kinds of material including stained glass, sculpture and relief work, painting and printmaking. This three year project began in 2005 and is directed by Dr Martin O'Kane, as part of the Centre for the Bible and the Visual Imagination at the University of Wales Lampeter.
