Work – Residencies

My first opportunity to work as an artist in residence was also my first major commission following the end of my degree course.

For ten weeks during the spring term of 1996 I worked at the Alun School in Mold on a project which culminated in the presentation of work centred on Branwen ferch Llŷr, a medieval Welsh tale from the mabinogi.

The residency was probably the first major artist residency in Wales to make creative use of digital media, and following this innovative project I applied for many further residencies without success. Throughout the residency I focussed my energy on curating and interweaving the work of the pupils, and in some ways this approach has been expressed in my ongoing teaching commitments.

I have been involved in a couple of other workshops for children, including the creation of digital images at a medieval fayre at Oystermouth Castle in 1998 and participation in the Big Arts Week programme in 2004 at Ysgol Carreg Hirfaen, Lampeter.

My most recent residency was during the Strata Florida excavations in June 2012, as part of my PhD at the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies.
