Visual Culture of Wales
|
Work – Visual Culture of Wales The Visual Culture of Wales Project was set up by the art historian Peter Lord at the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies in Aberystwyth in 1996. The intention of the project was to publish a three volume history of the visual culture of Wales from the early medieval period up until the 1950s. One of the conditions of the Arts Council Lottery Grant, which formed a significant part of the funding, was that a new media element was incorporated into the published outcomes. In 1999 I was appointed to the Centre to assist with the creation of a series of CD-ROMs, working with producer Will Howard as part of a small team.
The first of the three CD-ROMs was shortlisted for the Besterman McColvin medal for an outstanding work of reference in the electronic category, while the second CD-ROM, Imaging the Nation, won the award in 2002. Each of the CD-ROMs contain the whole text of the book with all of the images, most of which are viewable at much larger sizes than in the illustrations in the book. The first two CD-ROMs covering the modern period also include comprehensive artist biographies, with information about artists that is in some cases unique to the publications. As well as bibliographies and the ability to search for images relating to particular regions of Wales, there is furher original writing about aspects of the material with many further illustrations, audio, music and interviews. The books and CD-ROMs were both published in Welsh and English editions.
